Welcome to bess.farm – a dedicated platform tracking the transformation of farmland into battery energy storage assets.
Over the past three years, a quiet revolution has been taking place across the UK countryside. From Northumberland to Oxfordshire, from Surrey to Stirling, dozens of battery energy storage projects have been proposed, approved, and are now moving toward construction. They share a common naming convention: Farm BESS.
Projects like Church Farm BESS (70MW, approved January 2026), Tar Farm BESS (40MW, approved September 2025), Dolphingstone Farm BESS (63MW, approved July 2025), and Beechwood Farm BESS (57MW, approved January 2025) are not isolated cases. They represent a standardized asset class – one that has been systematically adopted by major UK developers including Bluefield, Apatura, Root-Power, Enso Energy, and Brockwell Energy.
What is a "Farm BESS"?
A Farm BESS is a grid-scale battery energy storage system located on agricultural land. These projects typically range from 12MW to 400MW, are developed under temporary planning consents, and are designed to be fully decommissioned and restored to agricultural use at the end of their operational life.
They serve a critical function in the UK's energy transition: storing excess renewable energy during periods of low demand and discharging it when the grid needs it most. They help balance supply and demand, reduce reliance on gas peaker plants, and enable higher penetration of wind and solar power.
Why bess.farm?
Despite the growing number of Farm BESS projects – at least eight real-world examples have been identified across the UK – there is no single source of information dedicated to this emerging asset class. bess.farm aims to fill that gap.
This site will cover:
Project tracking – detailed profiles of Farm BESS projects from planning to operation
Landowner insights – what farmers need to know about leasing land for BESS
Developer profiles – who is building these projects and where
Policy and regulation – how planning frameworks are evolving
Market analysis – investment trends, valuations, and industry dynamics
The Digital Brand Gateway for Farm BESS
As part of this initiative, we also hold the digital brand gateway for the Farm BESS asset class:
These domains represent the complete digital infrastructure for this growing sector – from global industry portal (farmbess.com) to UK-focused gateway (farmbess.co.uk) to landowner-facing platform (bess.farm).
What's Next?
In the coming weeks, we will publish detailed profiles of each Farm BESS project, starting with Church Farm BESS – Bluefield's 70MW project in Northumberland, approved in January 2026.
Whether you're a developer, landowner, investor, or simply interested in the future of energy infrastructure, bess.farm is your window into the rise of the Farm BESS asset class.
Stay tuned.
